An attestation des droits is a simple document that proves you are covered by France’s state health insurance, Assurance Maladie.
The document provides basic information about you, your Social Security number and any dependents whose healthcare is attached to your account.
It is a straightforward and more secure way of proving you are insured under the healthcare system than by scanning and sending a copy of your carte Vitale, which could lead to cases of fraud if lost.
When can it be asked for and how do I get it?
You can be asked for the attestation in several circumstances, but these are the most common:
When you are in hospital
When you are applying for a top-up mutuelle insurance policy
When you are applying for certain jobs
By certain healthcare professionals before some medical appointments
To show your child is covered by your policy when enrolling them at school/nursery or with a new sporting activity
An attestation can be downloaded from your ameli (online health) account, in the Mes démarches section, or using the ameli smartphone app. You can then print this.
If you do not have an Ameli account it is possible to download and print the document at a physical location that has an Assurance Maladie help station (bornes).
Use the to find your nearest stations by typing in your postcode, or go to your nearest Cpam (caisse primaire d’Assurance Maladie) for help.
Finally, you can call Assurance Maladie (3646 from inside France, +33 1 84 90 36 46 outside) to request it. There is assistance for those hard of hearing or visually impaired etc.
