Websites that charge a fee to make changes to a carte grise have sprung up since the procedure moved online, consumer watchdog UFC-Que Choisir has warned.

Following a trial period, carte grise applications and changes went online only from November 1 via the website of the Agence National des Titres Sécurisés

Many amendments to a carte grise, including changes of address, are free - but UFC-Que Choisir warned that searching for 'carte grise' into a search engine brings up a number of sites - including www.cartegrisefrance.fr, www.carte-grise.org, www.cartegriseminute.fr, and www.cartegrise.com - that offer to perform the service but charge 'administration fees' of up to €39.90.

For anyone who does not have access to a computer, 'digital points', with computers, scanners and printers are available in préfectures, where assistance can also be provided if people who find difficulty with the system.
