First snowfall of year at lower altitudes brings wintry mornings as drivers warned over icy roads

Drivers are being warned to stay vigilant on roads after snow settled in several areas

Snow has settled for the first time this winter in several areas of France, including in Normandy.

A mix of bitter cold winds and rainfall is forecast to bring snow to altitudes of 600m and above across France today, as well as to eastern areas including the Ardennes forest.

Initial forecasts predicted only a light dusting of transient overnight snow in Normandy and other areas of the north, however heavier-than-expected conditions have led to impressive images this morning.

Up to 5cm of snow, around 3cm more than expected in Normandy, fell in the region’s Orne department overnight.

Further snowfall is possible throughout the afternoon, though most will be concentrated in the east.

Elsewhere in France, snow was seen in Brittany and central departments such as Cher.

In these locations, snow fell at altitudes as low as 300m.

Snow is unlikely to fall on Friday due to dry weather, but may return on Saturday at higher altitudes and in the east.

Drivers warned over ice

Departments across northern and central France face tier-two yellow (ie not severe) neige-verglas warnings over black-ice and icy roads today and tomorrow (November 21) due to the conditions.

Drivers should ensure they follow standard safety rules and remain vigilant to special regulations such as temporarily reduced speed limits.

Additionally, they should use main roads or roads they are familiar with to reduce the risk of accidents. More tips can be found in our article here

Mandatory winter tyre rules do not apply in Normandy, but drivers in certain designated central and eastern departments must use them at the risk of being fined.
