Not everyone wants the pleasure of indulging in France’s wonderful cuisine

Dear Cynth,

My husband has always been fussy. His parents brought him up on fairly plain meat-and-two-veg meals and he has rarely strayed far from this culinary comfort zone. In the UK, it didn’t seem to matter much, but here in France we really struggle to find stuff he likes when eating with friends or at restaurants. How can I persuade him to be more adventurous with French food?

You reminded me of when I was a child in Glasgow and we used to eat at an Indian restaurant. I swore blind that I hated curry, always selecting steak and chips. In fact, I had never even tasted curry, and when I was eventually prompted to just try a little, I developed a life-long love of Indian food.

I am not suggesting that you treat your husband like a child, but has he actually even tasted the food he claims to dislike? Or is it a case that he instantly recoils in horror if he is presented with anything other than meat and two veg?

I suggest that you gently encourage him to try just a little of whatever you are eating. Impress upon him that part of the pleasure of living in France is indulging in its wonderful cuisine.

Point out that he is missing out on a potentially wonderful experience. Food is such a central part of French life and a bonding experience with international friends.

You could also explain that in some circles it might actually be considered rude not to at least sample what your hosts are offering.

He does not have to like everything, but life is too short to exist on bland food.

Might he be interested in learning to cook? This could become a shared hobby. You could gradually become more adventurous over a period of time.

I also thought I detested octopus – until I ended up eating it at a family dinner by mistake, and I realised it really wasn’t that bad!

Rome was not built in a day and culinary habits will not change overnight. Persevere and your husband might surprise you.
