Taking your car to the garage can be a daunting experience, especially when communicating in a new language. 

It is worth setting aside time to learn some key terms and phrases to help describe specific problems and understand proposed solutions.

Helpful vocabulary exercise 

Here are some key terms and phrases that could come in handy when talking about car parts in France.

Say all these parts in your best French accent. Now say there is a problem with each one. 

For example: Il y a un problème avec le coffre (There is a problem with the boot).

Speaking to a mechanic in French

Read through the following conversation and then say it out loud, paying attention to your pronunciation. 

You may want to do this a couple of times.

Bonjour Monsieur. J’ai besoin d’une révision annuelle. 

- Quelle est la marque et l’année de votre voiture?

C’est un Ford Fiesta, 2017.

- Vous avez votre carte grise?

Oui. Voilà. Je pense qu’il y a aussi un problème avec les freins.

- Pourquoi pensez-vous qu’il y a un problème?

Il y a un bruit et un voyant est allumé.

- Çelui-là c’est le voyant pour la pression pneus! Vous avez un pneu crevé!

Ah, c’est pourquoi c’est un peu difficile à conduire.
