Published

The number of fatalities on French roads increased greatly in July 2025.

There were 338 deaths recorded on the mainland French road network across the month, over 60 more than in the same period last year, according to data from the Observatoire national interministériel de la sécurité routière (ONISR).

It is the highest July death count since 2017 (although equal to those recorded in July 2022) and is the fourth consecutive month of 2025 where recorded deaths were higher than in 2024.

This comes after deaths in January and February were significantly below average.

Several departments are attempting to tackle the increase in road deaths with an increased police presence and more frequent checks.

The interactive table below shows the monthly road-death data in France between 2011 and 2025.

Motorcyclists were the only vehicle category to see death numbers fall in July, with nine fewer than in July 2024.

However all other groups saw a significant increase including car drivers (+46 deaths), pedestrians (+12 deaths) and cyclists (+8 deaths).

It also saw deaths increase among younger drivers in the 18 - 24 range (+20 deaths) and 25 - 64 range (+23 deaths).
