This will be the first official visit to France for the American president, who has upset some European leaders with his political decisions.

Following Mr Trump's decision to exit the Paris Climate Accord, Mrs Merkel said - "The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days."

Mr Trump accepted Mr Macron’s earlier invitation to attend the event on the Féte Nationale on July 14. US troops will take part in the military parade alongside French armed forces, to commemorate the centenary of the US entering the First World War.

The program will include a military ceremony at Les Invalides, a visit to the tomb of Napoléon, an interview at the Elysée palace, and a dinner between the presidential couples atop the Eiffel Tower.

The trip comes hot on the heels of the G20 Summit in Hamburg. A video from The Telegraph of the world leaders’ photo moment shows Mr Macron trying to make his way stealthily to the front row to be photographed next to Mr Trump.

But the nature of the relationship between the two men is ambiguous. Le Figaro declared that, “Macron wants to bring Trump in from the cold�. When they first met in May, a terse handshake was exchanged. “It wasn’t innocent,� said Macron. “We must show that we must not make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but we shouldn’t over-hype things either.�
