A fifth person has died of their injuries after Tuesday’s Christmas market attack in Strasbourg.

Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski, a 36-year-old Polish-born journalist according to reports, died on Sunday evening after five days in a coma following the attack on Tuesday. His family had kept him on life support so that those close to him could pay their last respects at the Hautepierre hospital in the city.

According to reports Mr Orent-Niedzielski and Italian journalist Antonio Megalizzi, who has also died, had tried to prevent attacker Cherif Chekatt from entering a busy concert venue.

Chekatt was well known to police, having served jailed time in France, Germany and Switzerland. He was shot dead by police after two days on the run.

Two people died soon after the terrorist incident in Strasbourg. A third victim died on Thursday, while Mr Orent-Niedzielski's death was confirmed shortly after that of Italian journalist Megalizzi.

Another 10 people remain injured, several seriously.
