I am not surprised about the news about France’s terrible record of abandoning pets (Pet owners champions of summer holiday dumpings’, July issue).

Dogs in France must always be on a lead, even in the country. Pens, where they can run freely, no longer exist, at least not in the south of France.

I once found myself in an area reserved for wild animals so I thought: if they can be free, so can my two dogs. A gamekeeper quickly told me that tame dogs must still be on a lead. However, like in Italy, the situation is probably better in northern France. I wish the plan for a pet-friendly holiday website success.
