Each new month brings new changes in France. We summarise the main points for May, including a rise in gas prices, a new EU tyre classification, and new funding for the unemployed and newly-qualified teachers.

Gas prices

Regulated gas prices will rise by an average of 1.1%.

This will include a rise of 0.3% for people who use gas for cooking, 0.7% for cooking and hot water, and 1.2% for gas heating.

This rise is due to the global price for liquid natural gas. Yet, despite this month’s rise, gas prices have dropped by 12% since January 1, 2019.

EU tyre classification

The classification labelling system for tyres across the EU will change from May 1 to include information about snow and ice.

The new system is intended to be easier to understand than the previous system and enable motorists to make a better choice.

As well as the information that was already included - fuel consumption, wet weather performance, and noise - the new labels will also explain the tyre’s performance on snow and ice.

It will also apply to HGV tyres.

Newly-qualified teacher bonus

New teachers are to receive a financial bonus.

This bonus will benefit nearly a third (31%) of permanent staff teachers during the first 15 years of their career and will decrease by seniority.

The bonus will amount to a maximum of €100 net per month for a permanent teacher, and €54 net per month for a contracted teacher.

Increased pay for unemployed people in training

Unemployed people who are in training, and who do not receive unemployment benefits, will see their pay rise from May 1 for the first time since 2002.

Young people aged 16 and 17 will receive €200 net per month, compared to €130 before. People aged 18-25 will receive €500, compared to €325 before. Those aged over 25 will receive €685 net, compared to €401 previously.
