Crematoriums in France sell on IUDs and gold teeth

Gold teeth, IUDs and prostheses which do not burn during the cremation process are often re-sold by French crematoriums without the deceased鈥檚 family being informed.

This 鈥渕illion-euro business鈥� has been denounced by watchdog and magazine 60 millions de consommateurs.

Deputy editor Christelle Pangrazzi said: 鈥淢ost of the crematoriums get the benefits of this. It鈥檚 a real ethical issue.鈥� A ton of metal represents around 鈧�60,000 when sold on to the car or aviation industry.

A 20% commission is given to intermediary firms which sell the metal but families do not receive any and there is no legal requirement to inform them. Sometimes money is donated to help low-income families pay for funerals.
