Brittany warned on sun dangers amid high cancer risk
Tourists and residents in Brittany have been warned to protect themselves from the sun this summer as an annual skin cancer awareness campaign begins again this year.
Brittany, the fourth biggest tourist destination in France, is also the region most affected by skin cancer - especially the most dangerous 鈥榲ersion鈥�, melanoma - and sees three times鈥� as many cases as the national average.
In response, a group called the League Against Cancer (la Ligue contre le cancer) organises prevention and awareness days throughout the whole of July, at Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine).
鈥淲e have to alert people, especially families, to the dangers of the sun,鈥� said Dr Jean-Fran莽ois Tourtelier, president of the Ligue in Ille-et-Vilaine, speaking to the news website 20 Minutes.
France sees 80 000 new skin cancer diagnoses every year - of which 14 350 are melanoma - and 1 800 deaths from the disease. In 2014, Brittany saw 1 305 cases, three times鈥� the national average.
The League suggests that wind or clouds in the region often hide the strength of the sun, so people do not protect themselves enough.
Similarly, the region鈥檚 Celtic roots may play a role, as residents often have very fair and fragile skin, especially as children - and it has been shown that prolonged exposure to the sun as a child heightens your risk of developing skin cancer as an adult.
Tips: How to avoid the worst of the sun
- Don鈥檛 go outside in the hottest part of the day
- Don鈥檛 sunbathe all day, even if you have sun cream on
- Wear sun cream and light clothing even if it is windy or there is light cloud
- Protect children the most, preferably with thin clothes rather than just sun cream
