BORDEAUX has been named the world’s top city for tourists in Lonely Planet’s Best In 2017 guide, published today.

“They used to call her the ‘Sleeping Beauty’, but – though she’s hit the snooze button a few times – is now wide awake and ready for action,” says the travel guide publisher.

The guide highlights the forthcoming high-speed train line, which from 2017 will take visitors from Paris to Bordeaux in just two hours, as one reason for the choice.

The city’s new wine-themed visitor experience, Cité du Vin, is another, along with the city’s ‘gastronomic revolution’ and impressive riverside development.

Every year, Lonely Planet rates the most attractive cities and countries for tourists to visit in an annual guide published in eight languages.

For 2017 Bordeaux in South-West France, is followed by Cape Town (South Africa), Los Angeles (United States), Mérida (Mexico), Ohrid (Macedonia), Pistoia (Italy), Seoul (South Korea), Lisbon (Portugal), Moscow (Russia), and Portland (United States).
