We frequently hear about natural disasters that are blamed on climate change. Industry and governments all say that they are trying hard to reduce pollution. Is it time, though, that the average shopper did his or her bit for the cause?

My suggestion is this: Each super / hypermarket must see several thousand customers a week. If each customer was charged an extra 5 centimes on their bill and this 5 cents was locked into a 鈥榞reen fund鈥�, it must be possible to raise several millions of euros each year that could be put to improving air, water and soil quality. Other major outlets could be tied into the scheme.

Cost to a once-a-week shopper 鈧�2.60 a year. I don鈥檛 think this is impossible. All it needs is some gentle persuasion and supervision.
