One chicken in eastern France did not take any time off on fête du travail - laying an egg that was more than three times the normal size.

The monster egg was spotted by breeder Patrick Jay, from Saint-Lattier (Isère) near Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme), who said that he had never seen an egg so large in his 15 years in the business.

The egg tipped the scales at a whopping 216g - some 72g heavier than an average goose egg. An hen's egg is considered large if it weighs 70g. The giant egg contained two yolks and another egg that weighed 60g, France Bleu reports.

Despite its size, the Isère egg is less than half the weight of the biggest hen's egg ever recorded. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest hen's egg was laid in February 1956 in New Jersey USA, and weighed 454g - or 1lb. It, too, had a double-yolk and also a double shell.
