Letters: UK banks are failing customers who live in France

Connexion readers share their experiences of delayed and cancelled cards

Reader says that delivery services are not entirely to blame

To the Editor,

Regarding the delivery of bank cards from the UK to France, I had to have debit cards for my HSBC account sent three times.

The first never arrived and, when I contacted HSBC, they cancelled that card and sent another. As that card did not arrive after six weeks I again contacted HSBC and they again cancelled the card and sent a replacement.

As you can possibly guess, the second card arrived the next day but when I tried to use this it was “eaten†by a cash machine, which told me it was invalid (as it had been cancelled by HSBC, I guess).

Seven weeks later, I received the third card which was put into operation without any problems.

One thing to note: both of the cards received were sent via Holland in what I can only assume is a low-cost, bulk mailing agreement that HSBC obviously has with one of the Dutch mailing groups.

I suspect therein lies the root of the problem, not La Poste who in my experience normally process mail quickly and efficiently.

It is time that HSBC (and First Direct) take their responsibilities to overseas customers seriously and recognise there is a world outside of the UK – in this case by using a more efficient postal service!

To the Editor,

I have had it from two of my banks – NatWest and Lloyds – over the last two years.

I went into the branches while in the UK and got one sent via my old UK address as redirected, and I received it the other month!

I asked for another NatWest card last year, which actually arrived here in France. However, they have since cancelled it for unusual activity, and forgot to tell me there is a ‘marker’ on my account.

This means I have to pick up a new one in the branch, even though I said I live in France!

I am just about to order a new card from my Nationwide account. Let’s see…
