Letters: I would gladly pay more to keep Ryanair at local French airport

Connexion reader says that keeping access to her French home is more significant than a minor increase in ticket price

France has increased its tax on airline tickets in a bid to encourage rail travel

To the Editor,

I urge fellow readers to write to Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, and ask him not to abandon French regional airports over the new solidarity tax on airline tickets (TBSS). Other low-cost airlines in France are applying the tax without punishing passengers.

I’ll gladly pay a few extra euros to keep flying from my local airport, Brive – the quickest way to see my grandchildren.

But Ryanair plans to pull out of Brive and Bergerac this winter, having already left Bordeaux. The impact on families and communities will be huge.

Ryanair claims the TBSS is unfair, yet EU rules already require airlines to include such taxes in ticket prices.

If Ryanair wants to protest, let them do so with publicity stunts, not by cutting services.

Regional connections matter more than headline “from €19.99†fares. My son’s wedding plans were thrown into chaos when Ryanair cancelled flights in Denmark over a similar tax.

Passengers are willing to pay a bit more for convenience and reliability.

Mr O’Leary: serve regional airports at good prices, as you do best. Passengers like me will pay the tax – and still buy the tea, Pringles and Kit-Kats on board.

A thankful Ryanair flyer hoping to keep it that way.
